LEDs
Philips and LED solutions
Philips is today’s undisputed leader in LED based lighting solutions. Recent acquisitions and enormous investments in research and development mean that Philips now has expertise at every stage of the LED value chain. From the basic semi-conductor to packages to modules, through to the end-products offered as luminaires, and the provision of tailor-made solutions to changing lighting needs. This combined knowledge and dedication has resulted in LED based lighting solutions that are not only practical and beautiful, but also energy-efficient and sustainable.

For Philips, however, the challenge to unlock the potential of solid-state lighting is not just about technology. As a market-driven company, every innovation is driven by the needs of end-users. It is all about improving people’s lives with lighting – making them feel more comfortable, more able to adapt their surroundings using lighting. Philips LED solutions offer them to create “scene-setting” – using the quality of light to create spaces that delight, and help evoke moods and atmospheres that simply make life better. Simply at the touch of a button.

Philips also consults extensively with lighting designers, providing them with customised solutions to new challenges they face in lighting needs. And this in turn helps develop new products for other applications. Customer and market input and Philips expertise combine into solutions for everyday needs.

Simplicity and LED solutions
LED based solutions are extremely user-friendly. A wide range of moods and atmospheres can be pre-programmed, so that the user has instant access to the right mood at just the touch of a button. Shops, for example, can change the mood of their interior to reflect the collection, the time of day, or even the weather. If it’s cold and rainy outside, the lighting can be warm and inviting. If it's a hot summer’s day, the interior can look cool and pleasant.

It is all based on a simple philosophy: understanding what people want from lighting and then fulfilling their needs.

The home, for example, must accommodate a broad range of activities - and thanks to LED solutions, each activity can have its own lighting atmosphere: bright clear light for cleaning or when the children are playing, subdued lighting for watching TV, romantic lighting for an intimate dinner, gentle lighting for an evening with friends - all available at the touch of a button.

Sustainability and LED solutions

Sustainability and respect for the environment are core values of Philips. And with LED based solutions, they take a major step forward in achieving both aims.

When considering the sustainability of LEDs, the first aspect that generally springs to mind is low energy use. But there are plenty of others, including waste reduction, recyclability, the use of materials & resources and the effect on building and design practices.

In fact, LED lighting supports sustainable design in several ways. It uses less energy than most other types of lamp, lasts longer (which means less frequent replacement and therefore reduced waste), is mercury-free, and can be housed in special luminaires designed for easier disassembly and recycling.

Our LED products

The flexibility of LED is unsurpassed. Not only do LED light sources offer a vast range of colours and intensities, they can also produce a large number of lighting effects.

Lighting effects

In order to harness the flexibility and power of LED, Philips has developed a number of products, each specifically designed to meet the requirements of lighting designs aiming to create a unique lighting effect. These effects include accent lighting, wall washing, grazing, contour lighting, guidance and ambience.

These are, in essence, the building blocks which can be combined together to create an overall lighting plan, which combines details and contours, background illumination and highlights.

Benefits of LED lighting

LED light sources are small and unobtrusive, easy to install, and can generally be fitted out of sight. They are extremely energy-efficient and their life is exceptionally long, cutting down both operating costs and the costs – and inconvenience – of maintenance.
